Has Mercedes-AMG Lost Its Way? The Rise, Fall and Possible Return of the V8 C63

When Mercedes-AMG launched the W204 C63 AMG in 2008, it created what many enthusiasts still regard as the greatest C-Class ever built.

At its heart was the legendary 6.2-litre naturally aspirated M156 V8 – the first engine designed and built entirely by AMG. Producing up to 457bhp in standard form & 487bhp with the Forged engine in the  Performance Pack, it wasn't just about outright performance.

It was about emotion.

The razor-sharp throttle response.

The relentless pull to over 7,000rpm.

The unmistakable soundtrack.

The W204 C63 didn't simply outperform its rivals.

It made every drive feel like an occasion.

Nearly two decades later, it remains one of the most desirable modern AMGs ever built.

The Perfect Evolution

As emissions regulations tightened, Mercedes-AMG evolved the formula with the W205 C63, replacing the naturally aspirated 6.2-litre V8 with the M177 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8.

Many enthusiasts were understandably sceptical.

Could a smaller engine really replace the character of the M156?

The answer surprised everyone.

Despite losing capacity, the W205 retained everything owners loved about the C63. It still delivered effortless V8 performance, brutal torque, rear-wheel-drive excitement and, perhaps most importantly, the unmistakable soundtrack that had become synonymous with the AMG badge.

It was faster.

More efficient.

More refined.

Yet it still felt unmistakably like a C63.

The Four-Cylinder Experiment

Then, in 2022, Mercedes-AMG made its boldest decision yet.

The latest W206 C63 S E Performance abandoned the V8 altogether.

Instead, Mercedes-AMG introduced a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder, paired with an advanced Formula 1-inspired plug-in hybrid system.

The headline figures were astonishing:

  • 680PS (671bhp)
  • 1,020Nm of torque
  • 0–62mph in just 3.4 seconds

On paper, it became the fastest and most powerful C63 ever produced.

From an engineering perspective, it was nothing short of remarkable.

But enthusiasts don't buy AMGs with a calculator.

They buy them with their hearts.

Performance Isn't Just About Numbers

The new C63 was unquestionably quicker than any of its predecessors.

Yet despite its astonishing performance, many buyers struggled to connect with it in the same way they had with the V8-powered models.

The thunderous soundtrack had gone.

The effortless, naturally aspirated character of the M156 and the brutal surge of the later M177 twin-turbo V8 had been replaced by a highly sophisticated four-cylinder hybrid. Technically brilliant? Absolutely. Emotionally? Many enthusiasts weren't convinced.

One of the greatest things about owning a C63 was that people knew you were arriving long before they ever saw the car.

Whether it was the unmistakable bark of the 6.2-litre M156 firing into life on a cold morning, the deep V8 rumble as you cruised through town, or the thunderous roar echoing through a tunnel, the C63 had a presence unlike almost anything else on the road.

It wasn't just the performance that made it special.

It was the theatre.

The sound.

The occasion.

It made every drive feel like an event.

The latest hybrid C63 may be faster than every generation before it, but for many enthusiasts, it lost the very thing that made the C63 legendary. Performance figures can be measured on a specification sheet, but the emotion of a handcrafted AMG V8 can only be experienced from behind the wheel.

Customers Voted With Their Wallets

The industry quickly began to notice.

Despite the incredible performance on offer, reports suggest the latest C63 has struggled to achieve the sales success Mercedes-AMG had anticipated.

The criticism was rarely directed at its speed.

Few questioned its engineering.

Instead, enthusiasts questioned whether replacing one of the world's most charismatic V8 performance saloons with a four-cylinder hybrid had gone too far.

Mercedes-AMG has since acknowledged that customer feedback has been impossible to ignore. While the company continues to invest in electrification, it has also confirmed development of a new generation of Euro 7-compliant V8 engines, demonstrating that the iconic eight-cylinder still has a future within the AMG line-up.

Could the V8 Make a Comeback?

Over recent months, rumours have continued to gather momentum that Mercedes-AMG could once again offer a V8-powered C63.

While there has been no official confirmation that the C63 itself will return to V8 power, enthusiasts have welcomed reports that AMG is actively developing its next-generation V8 platform. For many, it's a sign that Mercedes-AMG has recognised what made the C63 such an icon in the first place.

Whether the famous V8 returns beneath the bonnet of a future C63, or powers another flagship AMG model, remains to be seen.

But one thing is certain.

The demand has never gone away.

For enthusiasts around the world, the C63 has always been more than just a performance car.

It has been a celebration of one of the greatest V8 engines ever fitted to a sports saloon.

And if the rumours prove true, the unmistakable soundtrack that made the C63 a legend may once again echo through tunnels, turn heads in town centres and announce its arrival long before it comes into view.

For AMG enthusiasts everywhere...

That would be music to their ears.

The Meistech View

At Meistech, we've specialised exclusively in Mercedes-Benz and AMG vehicles for over 20 years.

We've worked on every generation of the C63, from the legendary M156-powered W204 through to the latest hybrid models.

The latest C63 is an incredible piece of engineering. There is no denying its performance or the technology that sits beneath it.

But the C63 has always represented something bigger than horsepower figures.

It represented emotion.

Character.

Drama.

A car that made every journey memorable.

For nearly two decades, the C63 wasn't recognised by its badge alone.

It was recognised by its soundtrack.

You didn't need to see one to know it was coming... you simply heard it.

Whether the future of the C63 includes a return to V8 power or another chapter in hybrid performance remains to be seen.

But one thing is certain.

The legendary M156 n/a 6.2 and M177 4.0tt C63 that followed didn't become icons because they were the fastest cars on the road.

They became icons because they made people smile every time they turned the key.

And that's something no specification sheet can ever measure.
